About Juffure Rest House…

welcome to Juffure

This friendly little guest-house is run by the young people of Juffure, the famous Alex Haley ‘Roots’ village.  It is an ideal place to stay if you want to visit James island and the Roots museum,  to learn  in detail about the realities of the slave-trade and sit and chat to the people who are descended from the family of Kunta Kinte.  There is a lot more for you to do around Juffure if you have time to stay a bit longer.

The village of Juffure can be reached from Banjul via the ferry-crossing at Barra. The people of Juffure will gladly make arrangements for you to reach the rest house by local transport, if you need to. Juffure is a typical Gambian village where people live in traditional Gambian compounds of mud-brick and make their living by farming. A stay at Juffure rest house is an ideal way of meeting the local people and learning about their way of life. You will be made very welcome!

The rest house is built in traditional Gambian style and is clean and cosy. The staff are very kind and thoughtful and look after you very well. The last time we stayed, they had been fishing and proudly presented us with the biggest king prawns I have ever seen in my life – truly colossal and very tasty…..!    So, accommodation and meals are lovely, and you can be entertained with traditional Gambian dancing and music if you would like, plus you can learn how to dance and play music if you choose…..everyone is free to ‘have a go’.

This is the perfect place for a nice get away and a family holiday with plenty activities and more all around, the children and adults of Juffure are there to help you have the best holiday ever!
